- Be careful, be smart, and be safe.
- Have children wear light-colored costumes, preferably with some reflective qualities to help them to be visible after dark.
- Thoroughly check all candy and discard any questionable pieces.
- Make sure costumes are not too long, and that they don't block the child's vision.
- Give children a cellular phone or money to call home if they need to.
- Avoid using masks. It's much better to use non-toxic and hypoallergenic face paints or make up.
- Set a specific time for children to be home and make sure the children understand the importance of sticking to it.
- Give your child a flashlight with a fresh set of batteries to carry.
- Warn them never to get into a stranger's car, or enter a home or an apartment building without a trusted adult being present.
- Ensure that all costumes and accessories are safe and flexible. You don't want any sharp or pointy edges to be exposed.
- Children should only trick or treat in familiar areas, and only at homes that have their porch lights turned on.
- Children should only trick or treat with a group or with their parents.
- Never approach a house alone.
- Have them walk - not run - on the pavement.
